What happened to just being a Muslim?
submitted 2 months 21 days 19 hours ago by: West Coast Eagle : 18 comments
A recent meeting with a revert to Islam, left me thinking about all those different schools of thought that we have in Islam. This fellow has embraced Islam and now struggling to find which school of thought to follow because this is what the "born muslims" are asking him to do.
There seem to be all these different groups, Hanafi.. Shafi'i.. Maliki.. Hanbali, wonder what happened to just being a Muslim!
Why should we follow one particular school, isn't that blind following? As long as we follow the Qur'an and Sunnah, we're safe, right?

When they are told, "Follow what GOD has revealed herein," they say, "We follow only what we found our parents doing." 2:170
Yes thats very difficult choice to make for reverted muslims and they should follow quran and sunnah and yes they are safe any one who follows quran and sunnah is safe .Out of 73 sect the one which would follow quran and sunnah will enter heaven >(JUNNAH)
Taimur77:
Its not difficult for reverted muslims only. This is difficult for born muslims as well.
ive always believed this shia sunni is all bullsh*t. also there are agha-khanis and bohris and smilies etc. its all crap
Imam Abu Haneefah, Imam Maalik, Imam al-Shaafa’i and Imam
Ahmad.
These imams learned fiqh (jurisprudence) from
The Qur’aan and Sunnah, and they are mujtahideen in this
Regard. The mujtahid either gets it right, in which case
He will have two rewards, the reward for his ijtihaad and
The reward for getting it right, or he will get it wrong,
In which case he will be rewarded for his ijtihaad and
Will be forgiven for his mistake.
None of them called people to follow his madhhab, or was
Partisan in following it, or obliged anyone else to act in
Accordance with it or with a specific madhhab. Rather they
Used to call people to follow the Qur’aan and Sunnah, and
They would comment on the texts of Islam, and explain its
Basic principles and discuss minor issues according to
General guidelines, and issue fatwas concerning people .
Allah the exalted says:
As for those who split their Deen and became sects you have nothing to do with them, their case will go to Allah, who then shall tell them what they use to do.
(Soorah An'aam: Ayah 159)
And be not of those mushrikeen who have split up their Deen and became sects, each exulting in whatever they have. (Soorah Rum (30): Ayah 31-33)
Was following the prophet not enough that we had to bring in Imams? There is no room for clergy in Islam
Trye, there is no room for clergy in Islam!
Can anyone suggest what do I suggest to this person. Poor guy is reading one book after another and getting more and more confused.

Ask him just to read Quran and Sahih Hadees or books of hadith.
Once i heard a story about a hindus who reverted to islam and went to shia mosque and they asked him to become shia muslim and then he went to sunni mosque and they asked him to become a sunni muslim and finally that poor hindu guy gave up and left both the mosques and became a hindu again.
Isn't that shame ful that a person left islam just because of these divisions.
It is amusing to see, that peoples indulged in these sorts of talks, i.e. saying how can all 4 Imams are correct etc. are ussually 'Gair Muqalids'.
Is is all amusing to see that the crowd which they attract is ussually very far awar from Islam.
It is also a fact that all these peoples, ussually you would find using T.V. as the main source. For example, Dr. Zakir Naeeq etc (I am not targetting him. I am naming him as he is one of the most famous.)
If you see the 4 Imam's laid down Fiqah principles, you would found very little difference. And that difference is as such not great.
You may listen some peoples saying that a person following a particular Imam is not following Quran etc.
This is not correct. What would you say if i am going to tell you the theory of Newton in my own words and you apply in the real world??? You are following my theory?
No... it is indeed what you are applying the words of the Newton in to the real world.
We don't follow the Imam's as the words of Prophet (Sallalao Allaihi Wasalam). Rather we accept that our knowledge is not as much as they had. Had we had enough knowledge, we would have not followed them. But due to our ignorance, we follow the explainations of Quran and Hadith laid by them in the light of Hadith. This is not following them.
I don't think the story laid down by the author to be true because the person who lead a man to Islam, couldn't guide him, what to do next??? (I don't intent attack on the person starting the topic, but still I want to warn the others of the intention of the topic strater as these sort of things are very common in our counrty, expecially our city, Karachi.)
@ Umer
I am not in Pakistan but in Australia...! This is not a fabricated case but a real one and I want to help this guy who learnt about Islam through reading books, attending some lectures on Islam at his university and through following some specific Cleric.
@ Umer
I wonder if Dr. Zakir Naik preeches any specifc sect....?

www.IIPC.tv----------> Br Mohammad Sheikh
ask that fellow to watch the lecture series of both of them and ask what ever he likes to ask from the speakers of both the organization they teach only from quran.
hope he will find his answers. regarding that hindu guy who got frustrated very soon i wish this same msg could reach him as well. i think these two organizations are following islam in its true sense.
take care

Thank you for the information and URL(s).
@WCE
All should visit the websites 'Salman' has mentioned. These are far better then others. Easy to grasp.
@ hasan
Alrighty mate`!
There are a few "Just Muslims" but there are more "paranoid muslims" that type 1 mentioned.
Say you are a "just" muslim and you "just defeated some unjust hindus at Panipat. Now its time to decide how to change their life style so they dont wear so much orange and revert to the blissful green.
Question: Would you tell then to stop ringing bells at the mandir and start shouting in a foreign language from minaretts that have yet to be constructed.?
The answer to this question will tell what happened to "Just Muslims"
