Amidst mounting crisis, Pakistan’s new government slashes food and fuel subsidies

Pakistan’s new coalition government has delivered a big business budget that slashes subsidies for food, fuel oil, electricity, and fertilizer by more than one-quarter—112.2 billion Pakistani Rupees, or US $1.6 billion. Journalist released from Guantánamo details abuse

After six years of imprisonment without charge, a well-known
cameraman for Al Jazeera news was released May 1 by the US military.
The reporter, Sami al-Hajj, was captured in 2001 while covering
the US invasion of Afghanistan and subjected to the torture and
abuse that is routine at US military-run prison camps.

Maoists emerge as largest parliamentary bloc in Nepal

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) was the clear winner
after provisional results in the country’s April 10 election
for a Constituent Assembly were announced yesterday. As well as
gaining 120 of the 240 directly-elected seats, the Maoists secured
97 of the 335 seats elected on a proportionate base. The overall
national vote for the CPN-M was 29.27 percent.
