The World Socialist Web Site interviewed workers and
professionals in Detroit about the worsening social conditions as gas
prices and food prices skyrocket. The WSWS spoke with Lon Rubenstein
who is living on a disability payment of just $600.00 per month. He
cannot afford to put gas in his car.

Pakistan’s new coalition government has delivered a big business budget that slashes subsidies for food, fuel oil, electricity, and fertilizer by more than one-quarter—112.2 billion Pakistani Rupees, or US $1.6 billion. The Pakistan People’s Party-led government has also pledged to gradually do away with all price subsidies, except possibly on food.

Sex and the City, based on the cable television series,
is a largely pointless exercise that appeals to the most uncritical
side of its intended audience.

Media comparisons with the devastating 2004 tsunami, which
claimed at least 220,000 lives in a dozen countries, including
