Food for thought

Yesterday I was sitting at a café with a friend, enjoying the rain and drinking coffee(though not a coffee lover). I saw a girl sitting next to our table. She was wearing a dupatta on her head looking pretty decent.

After some time she started smoking. I was a bit taken aback and said to my friend that what kind of person is she? She’s wearing a dupatta and smoking. My friend replied that I should not judge any one’s character via the fact that she’s smoking. Hmmm…I didn’t say anything but was left with a thought that was I being judgmental or was I right. Another question that came into my mind was that we pass such remarks on the basis of our society's norms, but what if I was sitting in some European country and saw a girl with a scarf/hijab/dupatta smoking. Would have I thought of the same kind of thought? I am leaving these questions to be answered by the member’s of this online community.

I am of the opinion that women should observe a certain code of conduct that displays integrity , which is even expected from us by our religion.

Why hold women to a higher standard of morality than men?

Would you have had the same reaction if you had seen a 'nice' guy smoking? Society needs to stop defining disparate sets of morality and behaviour for the two sexes

What's good for John should be equally good for Jane so either call a sin a sin for both sexes or don't call it a sin at all!

It takes a lot of time to learn to accept people for whosoever they are, no matter what the gender. Love them for what they are and forgive them for what they are not and strive for perfection at your own end. :)

Tolerance and patience are the key words for the most peaceful existence eva.

Smiking is not a sin..It is injurious so people dislike it...the smoke is a reason of disliking as well.  We feel shocked becasue here we dont see many women smoking..

In our southern punjab area(BWP, MULTAN , DG.KHAN) the old ladies of soem tribes do smoke HUQQA and no one objects them becasue it is in their customs. In kHI women do take Tobacco through PAN. The intake is same but it doesnt leaves smoke so people dont mind it.

modesty sho uld be there..We dont expect a lady with dupatta /hijab with cigrette same as we dont like a mOLVI standing in cinima row...it is not because pople think that they have no right to do that  , but it is becasue of the respect which is asscoaietd to beered and hijab.

it's only people's desperate morality......

I wear head scarf and I do smoke. It doesn't mean i am a characterless person. How could you judge someone's morality by his or her smoking habit? There are alot of highly respected men who are happened to be Islamic scholars but they do smoke.

Why do you consider smoking as a parameter of morality? Why dont you shock to see some hijabi girls and beard men involved in dating?

It is just your thinking. you see what you think. Nothing else

Sohpi: our society  observes morality from gesture postures clothing, style etc. It is wrong. Either change the thinking of society or accept it...

If people think a Hijab woman respectable then dont destory their imaginations and supposition otherwise they will stop respecting all of them..

Smoking is not a problem but smoking with a nobel posture is a problem...have you observed.. a man with beard smoking looks really bad.....it doesnt match with sunnah

Molana Abulkulam azad was a smoker..His grip on islamic matters cant eb challanged.

whats wrong if girls smoke ... this is a sick mentality

Yes, I agree that smoking is not a sin...it is makrooh (disliked) and like or not, there are certain standards or ethics that society expects of ppl of nobility...js as one would not expect to see the president or prime minister attending a convention in shorts or briefs, one would similarly not expect a hijaabi to be smoking...ultimately tho, we shd try n b less judgemental for indeed we all have our faults...i think the perception that most ppl have of hijabis being responsible is a little challenged when one sees them behaving irresponsibly but take heed, we should try and encourage one towards good (health included...as muslims blv that their body is a trust or amanat from Allah and we ought to take the utmost care of it)..Paradoxically, we should not be so quick to condemn forthrightly...use tact...honey is sweeter than lemon...

HAWA:

You explaiend it well.

I am glad alot of bloggers responded to my question and gave answers of their choice. I completely agree that that smoking is not a sin and drinking is condemed in Islam while smoking is not. But there are certain standards we expect from our society and if we think that adopting western standards will make us modern, I think they won't. As far as village women's are concerned they do lots of other things too.Why not adopt them as well.

@Hawa

I completely agree with ur facts.

TAIMUR   .

I  am smooker myself and if i can smoke why can't someone who is the female can not. But by smooking no one should conclude that the girl is a bad girl or may be a call girl i think thats what you mean. Ok if it happened in euorpe i would have though that the girl has just smoking habbit but she is a pious muslim women.

SMOOKING DOESN'T PROVE ANY MAN OR WOMAN TO BE BAD AT ALL.IN VILLAGES WOMEN SMOKE HUKKA S  SO ARE THEY BAD OFFCOURSE NOT.
