Train Derails in Pakistan; 56 People Killed, 200 Injured

An express train crowded with holiday travelers derailed in southern Pakistan killing at least 56 people and injuring about 200 others.

The train derailed near Mehrabpur, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) north of Karachi. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

On 19th Dec, the train was moving from Karachi towards Lahore. The train, which derailed at about 2 a.m., was loaded with an estimated 900 passengers, many of them heading home for the Eid-ul- Azha holiday.

Dozens of soldiers and police helped tend the injured and carry them away to waiting ambulances, as hundreds of people from the surrounding villages looked on. Army engineers used two cranes and cutting equipment to free the last survivors.

Pakistan's army is engaged in rescue and relief operations, the military said in a statement. An army medical camp has been set up and food and tents have also been provided.

"The place is difficult to reach," said Faisal Edhi of the Edhi Foundation, the country's biggest ambulance and rescue service. "We are using tractors and jeeps to conduct rescue work."

Previously, a speeding train struck a crowded bus at a railway crossing near Lahore in October, killing 12 people and injuring about 50 others. About 130 people died in Pakistan's worst rail crash, when three trains collided in the southern town of Ghokti in July 200.

--Who is responsible for this sad event? Govt? Railway? or the people who were travelling?
--Should Govt. ever able to reach the real cause behind this event OR this case will be closed like other cases?
