Too Much Perfume Could Signal Depression

If you're one those ladies who likes to layer on the
perfume, a new study says it could be a sign of depression. It seems kind of
weird, but there may be something to it.

We smell it all too often -- that certain someone in the office, in the
elevator, at family gatherings who just always seems to have gone crazy with
perfume.

Now a study out of Israel says it may be a sign of a serious problem. Our
scientific findings suggest that women who are depressed are also losing their
sense of smell, and may overcompensate by using more perfume.

My reaction when I first read it is that I actually laughed because I couldn't
imagine anyone had done such a study to do with perfume and depressed women.

TAIMUR ASGHAR QURESHI.

Thats interesting to know but some women may be using perfumes to attract guys and it may have nothing to do with depression.

I think the study is incorrect

Loud colors, perfume and voice signify confidence and exuberance both in the male and the female. In the animal and the human domain

I would question the authenticity of the study...!

I think most people wear perfumes to smell nice and counter any bad smell....and of course many do so to attract other people...!

As for me it feels good when other people say you are wearing a nice perfume...or you smell good !

after reading this, i google this topic and found more interesting articles on it.

This theory was published this year in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism. “Our scientific findings suggest that women who are depressed are also losing their sense of smell, and may overcompensate by using more perfume,” explains researcher Prof. Yehuda Shoenfeld, a member of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. “We also believe that depression has biological roots and may be an immune system response to certain physiological cues.”

Women who are depressed are also more likely to lose weight. With a reduced sense of smell, they are less likely to have a healthy appetite, he says.

Prof. Shoenfeld is an internationally recognized expert in autoimmune diseases and a medical doctor. He is the head of the Department of Medicine “B” at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel and edits four medical journals, including Harefua (in Hebrew), The Journal of Autoimmunity, Autoimmunity Reviews and the Israel Medical Association Journal. Work on this recent study was done in close collaboration with Prof. Joab Chapman, the head of the Neurology Department at Sheba Medical Center, and a professor at Tel Aviv University.

The discovery has a lot of meaning: for a lay person wearing a perfume might be a need or fondness, but to a person who realizes what impact and importance smells and fragrances bear, selection and choice of perfume and its style of wearing is totally different. Its about confidence and the inner self of someone. I believe that one can judge the personality and class of people through what they are wearing and how much they are wearing.......to me wearing too much perfume is rather being insecure, complexed(inferior/superior) and in other words.....unknowingly depressed. and people who believe that they are trying to attract people by wearing too much perfume.....sorry to say but to me they are somewhere, to some extent, complexed(inferior/superior) and thus depressed.

Well I think it is very subjective.....!

Not so sure there Maliha. The cologne I wear is not the one I like but the one I can find on sale!

Don't tell me you can buy anything for a bargain. That's not exactly the case with most of the people I guess. The smell has to be nice. You can't pay to smell bad.

Likewise.

I perfume I wear is the one that I get as a present. I have never bought a perfume for myself.

that's what Maliha wrote ....u are a lay person

If loud perfume was a sign of depressions, Pakistan would be a very sweet smelling place

again a lay person

Naila aunty, I am totally missing your point. Care to elaborate?

aunty.....   :-D

may be she's just 16

Agree with Khalifah...!

What do you mean naila? Please elaborate!
