The Biker Hit
submitted 9 months 8 days 2 hours ago by: omer.akhter : 2 commentsIt was 5 in the evening. I got off
the bus at bus stop and started walking slowly ... to my home.
My eyes enabled me to see a
gathering of people on the road. When I reached the spot, I saw an old woman
lying on the road and some girl beside her. It seemed to be sight of a road
accident.
Normally what I do on having such a
sight is nodding away all my humanity from my head and walk away. This time I
couldn't!
The old woman lying on the road ...
was just like my own mother. I couldn't walk away. I asked somebody about what
actually happened. It was revealed that a biker rode away after hitting her.
“Did anyone call for an ambulance?”
I asked
“Should we call the ambulance?” the
person asked the girl (who seemed to be the old women’s daughter)
“No … we will go home …”
I couldn’t come up with any logical reason of why she said
so …
“Please call the ambulance!” I said to the person
“Should we call the ambulance?” the person asked the girl
again …
“We should …” I said
“Ok … do it …”
I dialed 1122 … The ambulance was there in less than 10
minutes. They put her on stature and the ambulance was gone.
What I couldn’t understand was …
- Why
did she try to avoid ambulance? Is it the inability of correct decision
making due to stress or the life sucking costs of health services? - Why
did people not call the ambulance in the first place? What were they
waiting for? Why did they ask her? Did people think it was not that
serious or was there some other reason for these actions?
I am unable to find the answers…

interesting post, though i think people hesitate in calling ambulance cause of cost involved with it though the 1122 service is free and of a very good standard
Regarding your Q whereby you have asked why they sought her consent to call an ambulance - well, this may be far off but over here in Zimbabwe, some religions or even sects within Islam, do not view it as judicious to go to doctor...apolistics in this region are very firm on that over here even when it is life-threatening, they would prefer to treat a wound with salt, pray and that's it...i do not ascribe to this but that maybe one reason so far as I know...some would get offended if you by-passed them and called the ambulance putting aside the good intentions...
Another reason is that some may have thought that since the daughter did not make any frantic attempt to avail of the services of an ambulance, perhaps there was some reason as to why she witheld...was the injury that grave? was the daughter thinking of a medical friend or institute she could turn it? was there a more dire crisis that needed to be attended to? Or was she simply shocked into inaction...stumbling...or in denial..unable to call the ambulance? in post-accident trauma?
